News the Community Can Use

November 2007

Carolinas Association for Community Health Equity (CACHE) would like to thank all Corporate Sponsors and Attendees for their participation in CACHE’S 4th Annual Health Symposium held at the Charlotte Convention Center

November is American Diabetes Awareness Month

Could you have diabetes and not know it?

There are 20.8 million children and adults in the US with diabetes -- and nearly one-third of them (or 6.2 million people) do not know it!

Take this test at www.diabetes.org/risk-test to see if you are at risk for type II diabetes. Diabetes is more common in African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. If you are a member of one of these ethnic groups, you need to pay special attention to this test!

American Heart Association, Charlotte seeks fit-friendly companies

The American Heart Association, the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary health organization dedicated to reducing disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke, is looking for fit-friendly companies in Charlotte. The Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Program is a part of Start! — an American Heart Association initiative that encourages employers to create a culture at work that helps employees live longer, heart-healthy lives through walking.

Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Program participants are provided various options to implement and encourage physical activity, nutrition and cultural enhancements such as walking routes and programs, online newsletters, healthy food options in cafeterias and vending machines, annual health risk assessments and health programs, and tracking tools to motivate employees.

Participating companies are provided free access to program resources, materials to help promote company wellness programs internally, newsletter templates for distribution to employees and consultation on CPR/AED (automated external defibrillator) programs.

Employers that adopt the Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Program are also recognized on the program’s national web site, as well as in local media opportunities/activities.  Eligible companies can also use the program’s annual recognition seal for internal communications to employees and external, recruitment-related communications.

The American Heart Association recognizes that employees have time constraints and responsibilities that often keep them from taking care of their health.  Start! helps to improve the corporate culture by motivating employees to walk, which has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity.

Start! is locally sponsored by Harris Teeter and Presbyterian Cardiovascular Institute and nationally sponsored by SUBWAY® restaurants, Healthy Choice® and AstraZeneca.

Companies interested in joining the Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Program should contact Crissie Taylor at 704-374-0634 or visit www.americanheart.org/start to download an application.  Applications are due on December 31st for review by a volunteer expert panel. For more information about the Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Program, call 704-374-0634 or visit americanheart.org/start.
